Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum

History Museum · Hatteras, North Carolina

A maritime museum in Hatteras Village devoted to the shipwrecks of the North Carolina coast - the stretch of shoals and colliding currents that has sunk more than a thousand vessels and earned the name Graveyard of the Atlantic. It opened in 2002 and holds recovered artefacts, the story of the Life-Saving Service, and material from wrecks ranging from colonial merchantmen to Second World War U-boat victims sunk within sight of the beach.

Museum Drive, Hatteras, North Carolina, 27943, United States

Generally open daytime hours Monday to Saturday with reduced or no Sunday opening, and a CONTRACTED WINTER SCHEDULE - the Outer Banks empties between November and March and this museum reflects that. Admission is free or by donation. ⚠ IT IS IN HATTERAS VILLAGE at the far southern end of Hatteras Island, beside the Ocracoke ferry terminal, which is a long drive from the northern Outer Banks.
