Great Barrier Reef
UNESCO World Heritage Site: Great Barrier Reef (1981). The World'S Largest Living Structure, 2,300 Kilometres Of Reef And 900 Islands Visible From Space, Reached By Day Boat Or Liveaboard From Cairns, Port Douglas Or The Whitsundays, Holding More Coral And Fish Species Than Anywhere Else On Earth · Cairns, Queensland
The Great Barrier Reef runs for about 2,300 kilometres along the Queensland coast, the largest living structure on Earth and the only one visible from space, made up of roughly 2,900 individual reefs and 900 islands rather than one continuous wall of coral. UNESCO listed it as a World Heritage Site in 1981. Cairns is the main gateway for the northern and far northern sections, with Port Douglas and the Whitsundays serving as the other two main access points further south, each reaching a different stretch of reef by boat since nothing here is reachable by road. Day boats run from Cairns to pontoons and outer reef sites for snorkelling and introductory diving, while liveaboard trips of several days reach further offshore sites including the Ribbon Reefs and the Coral Sea. Coral bleaching linked to warming sea temperatures has damaged sections of the reef unevenly in recent years, and which sections are healthiest changes year to year, so checking current operator advice before choosing a site matters more here than at most reef destinations.

The reef itself has no opening hours, being open ocean and reef rather than a gated site. Day boat tours from Cairns typically depart early morning and return mid to late afternoon, with exact times varying by operator and tide. Liveaboard trips run multi-day fixed itineraries booked in advance rather than a drop-in activity. Marina departure points and dive shops keep standard daytime trading hours. Weather and sea conditions occasionally cancel or reroute a day's sailing with little advance notice given.
