Great Falls Park

Waterfall · McLean, Virginia

Fifteen miles from the centre of Washington, the Potomac drops seventy-six feet through a jumble of ledges and then funnels into Mather Gorge, a slot the river has cut to sixty or seventy feet wide. Three overlooks reach it on a short level walk from the car park. The ruins of the Patowmack Canal are beside them — George Washington's company, the first canal in America to use locks to get boats past a falls.

9200 Old Dominion Drive, McLean, Virginia, 22102, United States

Park generally open daily 7 AM to dark, hours shifting with the season. Visitor centre generally 10 AM - 4 PM. Entrance fee per vehicle, valid three days. The gate closes when the car park is full.
