Great Lakes Aquarium

Aquarium · Duluth, Minnesota

A freshwater aquarium on the Duluth harbourfront, opened in 2000 and built around a premise almost no other American aquarium uses — that the fish worth showing are the ones outside the window. The centrepiece is a two-storey tank representing Isle Royale, the national park out in Lake Superior, and the collection runs to lake sturgeon, trout and the invasive species that have reshaped these waters. There are otters, which are the reason most families actually come, and a rooftop deck looking over the harbour.

353 Harbor Drive, Duluth, Minnesota, 55802, United States

Open daily year round, generally 10:00 to 17:00 with seasonal variation; closed on some major holidays. Admission is charged and is slightly cheaper online. Feeds, diver presentations and keeper talks run to a posted daily schedule that is reduced in winter. Parking is in the adjacent harbour lots and is charged, and it fills on summer weekends.
