Great Mosque of Herat
Mosque · Herat, Herat
Herat's Friday Mosque — Masjid-e Jami — founded by the Ghurid sultan Ghiyath al-Din around 1200 and rebuilt, retiled and enlarged by nearly every dynasty since, wearing eight centuries of Islamic architecture on one four-iwan plan around a colossal courtyard. Its on-site tile workshop has cut and fired replacement mosaic by hand for decades, which is why the facades still blaze. The October 2023 earthquakes damaged walls and minarets; officials reported restoration substantially complete by late 2025, though 2026 accounts from residents describe slower progress.
