Great Smoky Mountains Railroad

Historic Route · Bryson City, North Carolina

A heritage railroad running excursion trains out of Bryson City on the former Southern Railway Murphy Branch, through the Nantahala Gorge and along the Tuckasegee River in the far west of the state. It was formed in 1988 on track that would otherwise have been abandoned. The Nantahala Gorge run crosses the Fontana Lake trestle and drops into a gorge the road cannot follow, which is the whole argument for seeing this country by rail.

45 Mitchell Street, Bryson City, North Carolina, 28713, United States

⚠ EXCURSION TRAINS RUN ON A PUBLISHED TIMETABLE, not continuously - typically one or two departures a day, more in peak season, and fewer or none in parts of winter. TICKETED AND BOOKED AHEAD. The Polar Express in November and December is the busiest programme of the year and sells out months in advance. Check the timetable before planning a day around it.
