Great Wall of China - Badaling Section

UNESCO World Heritage Site (The Great Wall, 1987); National 5A Tourist Attraction · Beijing, Beijing

The most-visited stretch of the Great Wall and the first to be restored and opened to tourists, in 1958: a broad Ming-dynasty rampart built around 1505 to guard the mountain pass northwest of Beijing, climbing steeply along the ridges on either side of the old Guangou road. It is the section where visiting heads of state, from Richard Nixon in 1972 onward, have been taken, and the one most package tours still choose. The steeper North section climbs to the high watchtowers beneath the famous slogan that no one is a true hero until they reach the Great Wall; the South section is gentler. A high-speed rail station deep beneath the mountain now puts it about 20-30 minutes from central Beijing, and a daily cap of 65,000 visitors applies.
