Great Wall of China - Mutianyu Section
UNESCO World Heritage Site (The Great Wall, 1987); National 5A Tourist Attraction · Beijing, Beijing
The most-visited Great Wall section among international travellers: a fully restored Ming-dynasty stretch of 22 watchtowers riding forested ridgelines in Huairou District, about 70 km northeast of central Beijing. First fortified in the 6th century and rebuilt in 1568, it is unusual for having battlements on both sides of the walkway, and its towers look out over chestnut orchards and unrestored wall fading into the hills. A cable car and a chairlift climb from the valley, a famous toboggan slides back down, and crowds are far thinner than at Badaling. This row covers Mutianyu only; Badaling, Jinshanling and Simatai are separate destinations.
Mutianyu Road, Huairou District, Beijing, Beijing, China
Roughly 7:30-18:00 in high season, 8:00-17:00 in winter; lift and toboggan hours are shorter than wall hours. Open year-round.
