Green Animals Topiary Garden

Formal Garden · Portsmouth, Rhode Island

Seven acres above Narragansett Bay in Portsmouth, planted from 1872 and described as the oldest and most northern topiary garden in the United States. Around eighty sculpted trees and shrubs stand across it, among them a menagerie of animal figures shaped in California privet and English boxwood — a giraffe, an elephant, a camel, a bear. Alice Brayton, who inherited the property and named it, left it to the Preservation Society of Newport County on her death in 1972, which is why a working nineteenth-century estate garden survives intact.
