Green Bank Observatory

Observatory · Green Bank, West Virginia

The first national radio astronomy observatory in the United States, founded in 1956 in a Pocahontas County valley chosen because the mountains screen out radio noise. Its Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope is the largest fully steerable radio telescope in the world, a dish roughly 100 metres across that can be pointed anywhere in the sky. The site sits inside the National Radio Quiet Zone, where transmitters are restricted by law across thousands of square miles, so mobile phones simply do not work here.

Science centre open daily in the warmer months, generally 9 AM - 5 PM, with a reduced schedule and reduced tour timetable in winter. Guided telescope tours run on a published daily schedule. Check before travelling.
