A Small Masterpiece Of Early Ottoman Art, In The Yesil Complex With A Medrese, A Bath And A Cemetery, Near The Bursa Ulu Cami And The Koza Han · Yildirim, Bursa

The Green Mosque (Yesil Cami) and the Green Tomb (Yesil Turbe) stand together on a hillside in the Yesil district of Bursa, about 2 km east of the city centre. They were finished around 1424 for Sultan Mehmed I, in the years when Bursa was the Ottoman capital, and they count among the most refined buildings of early Ottoman art (confirm). The mosque has a small, balanced plan with a raised sultan loge above the entrance, carved marble portals and an interior covered with blue-green tile panels in Iznik and Persian style that give the complex its name. The tomb sits across the terrace, its outer walls once clad in turquoise tiles, and it holds the sultan cenotaph beside the graves of family members. The complex also had a medrese, now a museum of Turkish and Islamic arts, a bath and a cemetery under cypress trees. Both buildings are active places of worship, so dress modestly, take off your shoes and avoid the prayer hours. Plan about an hour, and confirm hours before going.

The mosque and the tomb are open to visitors most of the day, roughly from sunrise or 08:00 to late afternoon or sunset (confirm), and they close to sightseeing during the five daily prayers, with the longest pause around midday on Fridays. Prayer times move through the year with the sun, so check the day. The tomb, the former medrese museum and the terrace shops may keep their own times, and the museum often closes on one weekday. Weekends and school holidays bring Turkish families and coach groups from late morning, and the first hours after opening are the calmest. Confirm times on the day, and expect a short wait if a prayer is under way.
