Green Mountain National Forest
National Forest · Rutland, Vermont
Nearly four hundred thousand federal acres down the spine of Vermont, established in 1932 on land that had been logged and farmed to exhaustion and then abandoned - the forest is a century of recovery rather than a survival. It holds eight designated wilderness areas, about nine hundred miles of trail, and long stretches of both the Long Trail and the Appalachian Trail. With the White Mountains in New Hampshire it is one of only two national forests in the whole of New England.
231 North Main Street, Rutland, Vermont, 05701, United States
Open year round with NO ENTRANCE FEE AND NO GENERAL PERMIT anywhere in the forest. ⚠ A DAY-USE FEE APPLIES AT SOME DEVELOPED RECREATION, SWIMMING AND PICNIC SITES. Campgrounds are reserved on recreation.gov and book ahead for foliage weekends in the first half of October. DISPERSED CAMPING IS PERMITTED THROUGH MOST OF THE FOREST under posted rules. ⚠ MUD SEASON, ROUGHLY LATE MARCH TO LATE MAY, is when the high trails should be left alone, and the Green Mountain Club asks walkers off the Long Trail then. Higher forest roads are unploughed in winter and the season turns to nordic skiing and snowshoeing. ⚠ THE LONG TRAIL IS MAINTAINED BY THE GREEN MOUNTAIN CLUB rather than the Forest Service even on federal ground. ⚠ ANOTHER 421,889 ACRES INSIDE THE FOREST BOUNDARY ARE IN OTHER OWNERSHIP - check a current map before assuming access.
