Green-Wood Cemetery
Historic Site · Brooklyn, New York
Four hundred and seventy-eight acres of glacial hills in Brooklyn, founded 1838 as one of America's first RURAL CEMETERIES — landscaped burial grounds built as public parks before public parks existed. By the 1860s it drew half a million visitors a year, second only to Niagara Falls among American attractions, and the pressure it created is a direct reason Central Park and Prospect Park were built at all.
