Greenleaf State Park
Oklahoma State Park With 1930s WPA And CCC Structures; Trailhead Of The 18 Mile Ankle Express Trail · Braggs, Oklahoma
A quiet park of about 565 acres around a 930-acre lake in the Cookson Hills south-east of Muskogee, built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s and still dominated by their stonework. Greenleaf Lake allows no boats with motors above a strict limit, which keeps it calm: this is a fishing and paddling lake, not a ski lake, and the bass and crappie fishing is good because of it. A swinging footbridge crosses an arm of the lake near the campground, and the park is the trailhead for the Greenleaf Trail, an 18-mile backpacking route into the Cherokee Wildlife Management Area with primitive shelters, one of very few real backpacking trails in Oklahoma. Sixteen cabins built by the Works Progress Administration in the 1930s sit above the shore, sleeping two to eight with full kitchens, though they no longer supply dishes or cookware. Jet skis and motorised watercraft are banned on the lake, the two backcountry sites on the Ankle Express trail are free, and children 16 and under fish the kids' pond free.
