Greenport
Beach Town · Greenport, New York
⚠ THE NORTH FORK'S WORKING HARBOUR VILLAGE — a former whaling, shipbuilding and oystering port at the end of Long Island's quieter fork, ⚠ REACHABLE BY TRAIN FROM MANHATTAN, WHICH ALMOST NO HAMPTONS DESTINATION IS. It has a 1920s carousel in a glass pavilion, a working waterfront, and the Long Island wine country at its back.
Main Street, Greenport, New York, 11944, United States
⚠ AN OPEN VILLAGE — free to walk, and the working waterfront is the point. ⚠ YOU CAN COME BY TRAIN, which is almost unique on the East End: THE LIRR RUNS TO GREENPORT at the end of the North Fork line, with no car and no Hamptons traffic. ⚠ BUT SERVICE IS GENUINELY SPARSE, especially off-season — CHECK THE TIMETABLE AND THE RETURN BEFORE COMMITTING. ⚠ TAKE BOTH FERRIES: Greenport to Shelter Island, across, then on to North Haven and Sag Harbor, which is in this database. It is the best way to see the East End. ⚠ SEPTEMBER AND OCTOBER ARE THE NORTH FORK'S BEST MONTHS — harvest in the vineyards, warm water, thin crowds. ⚠ THE CAROUSEL, THE SEAPORT MUSEUM AND MUCH OF THE VILLAGE ARE SEASONAL; a February visit finds a quiet working port and little else. ⚠ Some East End beaches restrict parking to residents in season.
