Greenville and Falls Park on the Reedy

Heritage District · Greenville, South Carolina

A downtown with a waterfall in the middle of it, which is the result of a decision most American cities would not have made: in 2002 Greenville demolished a four-lane highway bridge that had covered the Reedy River falls for decades, and replaced it with a curved pedestrian suspension bridge set deliberately off to one side so the view stays unobstructed. Main Street above it was narrowed from four lanes to two and planted with trees. The whole thing is free.

Camperdown Way, Greenville, South Carolina, 29601, United States

FREE and open daily, generally 7 AM to 9 PM for the park, with Main Street and the surrounding downtown open at all hours. The Liberty Bridge and the falls overlooks are lit after dark. The Swamp Rabbit Trail running through the park is open year round. Restaurants, shops and the Peace Center keep their own hours.
