Greenwich Village and Washington Square Park
Heritage District · New York, New York
The neighbourhood west of Broadway that broke Manhattan's street grid because it was already built when the grid arrived in 1811 — which is why the streets bend, why West 4th crosses West 10th, and why it still feels unlike anywhere else in the city. Washington Square Park at its centre was a POTTER'S FIELD holding an estimated twenty thousand burials before it was a park, and they are still under it.
Washington Square, New York, New York, 10012, United States
An open neighbourhood — free, no gate. WASHINGTON SQUARE PARK is open daily, generally 6 a.m. to midnight, and is free. The STONEWALL NATIONAL MONUMENT outdoor site and Christopher Park are open and free; the visitor centre keeps its own hours. Shops, restaurants and jazz clubs keep their own hours and the MacDougal and Bleecker Street strip runs very late. ⚠ THE VILLAGE HALLOWEEN PARADE on 31 October closes Sixth Avenue and the surrounding streets.
