Greenwood Rising
History Centre On The 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre And The Greenwood District; Opened 2021 · Tulsa, Oklahoma
A history centre on Greenwood Avenue in Tulsa, opened in 2021 for the centenary of the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre, when a white mob burned thirty-five blocks of the Greenwood District, the Black business quarter known as Black Wall Street, killing an estimated one to three hundred people and leaving thousands homeless. The galleries begin with Greenwood at its height, with its own banks, theatres, hotels and newspapers, move through the massacre itself using survivor testimony, hologram-style interviews and contemporary newspaper pages, and end on the decades of urban renewal and highway building that took what the fire did not, and on Greenwood today. The building sits at Greenwood and Archer, beside the surviving brick storefronts and the Black Wall Street Memorial, a short walk from the Greenwood Cultural Center and John Hope Franklin Reconciliation Park.
