Grey Towers National Historic Site
National Historic Site · Milford, Pennsylvania
A French chateau-style mansion above Milford, designed by Richard Morris Hunt and built in 1886 for James Pinchot, whose son Gifford founded the United States Forest Service and served twice as governor of Pennsylvania. Gifford gave the house and its grounds to the Forest Service in 1963 and Kennedy came to dedicate it, which makes this the rare case of a country house owned by a federal land agency rather than a park service. The oddest thing on the property is the Finger Bowl — an outdoor dining table that is a shallow moat of water, across which bowls of food were floated to guests.
151 Grey Towers Drive, Milford, Pennsylvania, 18337, United States
Grounds, gardens and the Finger Bowl open daily during daylight, FREE, all year. The house is by guided tour only, SEASONAL — generally late spring through autumn — on a limited daily schedule with a modest charge, and does not run in winter. Verify the current tour season and days on the Forest Service page before travelling.
