Griffith Observatory

Observation Deck · Los Angeles, California

Griffith Observatory is an Art Deco landmark on the south slope of Mount Hollywood in Griffith Park, opened in 1935 and free to enter. It holds exhibits on astronomy and Earth, a planetarium with ticketed shows, rooftop telescopes that are free for public viewing on clear nights, and some of the best views in Los Angeles: the basin, downtown, the ocean on clear days and the Hollywood Sign across the canyon. It suits families, astronomy fans and anyone chasing a skyline sunset. The catch is access: the narrow road and small lots are overwhelmed on weekends and at sunset, and shuttles, hiking and rideshare are often better than driving. It is closed one weekday a week. Confirm hours, parking rules, shuttle service and show tickets before you go, and check for fire or road closures and any weekly closed day, because the road up the hill can be shut with little warning on red flag days or during large events.

The observatory is open most days from midday or late morning until late evening, with longer hours on weekends, and it has traditionally been closed on Tuesdays - confirm the current schedule and holiday closures. The grounds and terraces are open during these same hours, and the free telescope viewing happens after dark on clear nights, with the exact start time shifting with sunset. Planetarium shows run at set times through the day and evening and can sell out. The park roads can close entirely during wildfire danger, high winds or major events, and the shuttle and parking lots keep their own limits, so check the day's status online before you drive up.
