A working family farm east of Lawrence that plants about forty acres of sunflowers timed to bloom for roughly two weeks in early September, opens the field free to anyone who wants to walk into it, and charges a dollar a stem for cut flowers. In those two weeks tens of thousands of people come and it is among the most photographed places in Kansas. For the other fifty weeks of the year it is a field, and turning up in June gets you nothing at all.
