Grizzly Creek Redwoods State Park
State Park · Carlotta, California
Grizzly Creek Redwoods State Park is a small, quiet park in Humboldt County on Highway 36 near Carlotta, beside the Van Duzen River, in the heart of California's North Coast redwood country. It protects old-growth coast redwoods on the river flat and the slopes above, with a campground, a short nature trail and river access that has drawn swimmers in summer - confirm what is open. It gets a fraction of the visitors of the big redwood parks on Highway 101, which is its appeal: you can walk among giant trees and hear the river without a crowd. The nearby Cheatham Grove is known as a film location for the forest moon scenes of Return of the Jedi. Fog and rain are common, winter flooding of the Van Duzen can cut access, and Highway 36 is twisting, with logging trucks. Fortuna and Eureka are roughly 30 to 45 minutes away - confirm. Humboldt Redwoods State Park is a separate place, a few miles off. Bring layers and confirm the road, because a rain-damaged highway can end a trip before it starts.
16949 CA-36, Carlotta, California, 95528, United States
Grizzly Creek Redwoods has generally been open for day use from around sunrise to sunset, but facilities, campground availability and staffing have varied, and winter flooding or road damage on the Van Duzen River and Highway 36 has closed parts of the park for long periods - confirm the current status with California State Parks before you plan around it. There is usually no staffed visitor centre with fixed hours, and services such as a kiosk or camp host may be seasonal. Fog often keeps mornings cool and grey until late in the day, even in summer, and daylight shortens quickly in winter. Cheatham Grove and other nearby groves have their own access rules and are not always open. Check the State Parks page and local road conditions on the day you travel.
