Grounds For Sculpture

Art Museum · Hamilton, New Jersey

Forty-two acres of the old New Jersey State Fairgrounds at Hamilton, turned into a sculpture park in 1992 by Seward Johnson — a Johnson & Johnson heir who was also a sculptor, and whose own painted bronze figures recreating Impressionist paintings are scattered through it. About three hundred works stand in landscaped gardens designed so that you come round a hedge and find one, rather than viewing them across a lawn. It is genuinely one of the best sculpture parks in the United States and it sits between Princeton and Trenton, which means almost nobody outside the region has heard of it.
