Grutas de Cacahuamilpa
Parque Nacional (CONANP) · Pilcaya, Guerrero
One of the largest cave systems in the world open to the public, about thirty minutes from Taxco in Guerrero, and part of a national park declared in 1936, among the first in Mexico. A lit, paved walkway runs roughly two kilometres through a sequence of enormous chambers, some more than eighty metres high, past stalagmites and columns the size of buildings that guides name for what they resemble: a throne, an organ, a champagne bottle. It is a show cave, not an adventure cave, so expect a guided group, ordinary shoes and warm, humid air rather than crawling and cold. Outside, a separate path leads down to Dos Bocas, where two underground rivers pour out of twin openings in a cliff. Tours run on a fixed schedule and the last leaves earlier than people expect, so aim to arrive by midday. Guerrero carries a high national travel advisory, so check current state advice and drive by day, though the Taxco road and the park are regularly visited. Pair it with Taxco for a full day.
