The Best Known Cave In North East Mexico And A Monterrey Day Trip, Cool Inside And Hot Outside, With Long Queues On Weekends And Holidays · Garcia, Nuevo León
Grutas de Garcia is a show cave high on the Sierra El Fraile, above the town of Garcia, about 35 km north-west of Monterrey in Nuevo Leon. A cable car lifts visitors up the mountain side, with wide views over the valley, and from the top a short walk leads to the entrance. Inside, a lit route of about 1 km on stairs and walkways passes chambers of stalactites, columns, pools and rock curtains in a humid, cool air. The whole cave system runs about 3 km, but only the visitor circuit is open. It is the best-known cave in north-east Mexico and an easy day trip from Monterrey, and it suits families, couples and anyone who wants a cool break from the heat. It is worth the detour on a weekday; it is not worth it on a holiday weekend when queues for the cable car and the cave can stretch for hours. The cable car stops in strong winds or for maintenance, so check before you drive out. Bring a light jacket, if you tend to feel the damp.

The cave and cable car usually open most days from morning to late afternoon, with the last ride up and the last entry set well before closing; confirm current times and days, as a weekday may be CLOSED for maintenance. The cable car stops in strong wind or storms and during repairs. Parking and the view from the lower station are FREE or low cost, but the cable car and the cave need tickets. Queues are longest on weekends and holidays, so arrive when the doors open.
