Guadalupe, Zacatecas
A Town Next To Zacatecas With A Baroque Franciscan Convent That Is Now The Museum Of Viceregal Art, One Of The Finest Collections Of Colonial Painting In Mexico, With A Spectacular Library, A Chapel Of Napoles With A Gilded Interior And A River Bank Park. Easy By Bus From Zacatecas City, Half A Day · Guadalupe, Zacatecas
Guadalupe is a town about 10 km east of Zacatecas city, built around a large former Franciscan convent that now houses the Museum of Viceregal Art. The collection of colonial painting is among the best in Mexico, with large canvases from the 17th and 18th centuries, and the convent's library, cloister and baroque church are worth a slow visit on their own. Beside the convent stands the Capilla de Napoles, a chapel whose interior is covered in gilded detail and whose design is richer than its modest door suggests. Behind the convent an orchard garden gives a quiet place to rest. The town itself is ordinary and busy, so the convent is the reason to come. It suits art and history lovers, and anyone who already has a day in Zacatecas. It is worth half a day by bus from the city. It is not worth the trip if you dislike museums or if you arrive on a Monday, when the museum is usually closed. Check current Zacatecas travel advice before you go.
