Guardalavaca and Holguin

Package Beaches On The North East Coast With Their Own Charter Airport, Alongside Chorro De Maita, The Largest Indigenous Burial Ground Found In The Caribbean, And The Bay Where Columbus Made His First Cuban Landfall · Guardalavaca, Holguin

Holguin province has the beaches that fill the charter flights from Canada - Guardalavaca, Esmeralda and Pesquero, curved and white and backed by low cliffs - and it also has the two most important pre-Columbian sites in Cuba, which almost nobody staying on those beaches ever sees. At Chorro de Maita, a museum is built directly over an excavated indigenous burial ground: more than a hundred graves, left in the ground where they were found, with a reconstructed Taino village on the slope beside it. It is the largest such site discovered in the Caribbean. And a few kilometres along the coast at Bariay, a monument marks where Columbus is generally accepted to have made his first Cuban landfall in October 1492 and wrote that it was the most beautiful land human eyes had seen. Holguin city inland is a working provincial capital with squares, a cigar factory and a hill of 458 steps up to a cross, and it is where the province actually lives.

The beaches are public and open. Chorro de Maita and its reconstructed village keep daytime hours with a weekly closing day. The Bariay monument and the Holguin city museums keep their own hours. Resorts run all year and have generators; the city and the villages have the same power cuts as the rest of the country.
