Guayaquil is Ecuador's largest city and main port, hot and humid, and the usual gateway to the Galapagos. Its best visitor stretch is the Malecon 2000, a 2.5 km riverfront walk along the Guayas river with gardens, fountains, a Moorish clock tower, the Rotonda monument, museums, a Ferris wheel and food courts. At the north end is Las Penas, the oldest neighbourhood, where 444 steps climb Cerro Santa Ana between painted houses, cafes and small galleries to a lighthouse and chapel with city views. Parque Seminario, with its wild land iguanas, is a short walk inland. Be honest: for many travellers Guayaquil is a gateway, not a destination, and a day or an evening is enough. Security matters here. The city has high crime rates, so stay in the tourist zones, use ride apps and check current advice before you go. Fares and hours change, so confirm them locally. The walk is easy, the food is good, and the riverfront is where locals spend their evenings. Go in daylight or early evening and keep your belongings close.
