Gulangyu Island

UNESCO World Heritage Site (Kulangsu, A Historic International Settlement, 2017); National 5A Tourist Attraction · Xiamen, Fujian

A small, car-free island five minutes by ferry from Xiamen, where colonial-era villas, consulates, churches and tropical gardens climb over granite hills above sandy coves. After 1903 Gulangyu became an International Settlement shared by more than a dozen countries and returning overseas Chinese merchants, who built a unique blend of Western, Southern Fujian and Southeast Asian architecture; it was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, Kulangsu, a Historic International Settlement, in 2017. Nicknamed Piano Island for its musical tradition, it has a Piano Museum and an Organ Museum. Sunlight Rock, the highest point, looks across the strait to Xiamen's skyline, Shuzhuang Garden hangs over the sea, and a giant statue of Koxinga stands on the rocks. Its lanes fill with day-trippers and snack shops, so early mornings and evenings are best.
