Gulf Shores and Orange Beach

Beach Town · Gulf Shores, Alabama

Thirty-two miles of white quartz sand on Alabama's short stretch of the Gulf of Mexico, and the reason a large part of Tennessee, Kentucky and Ohio drives south every summer. The sand is unusually white and squeaks underfoot because it is quartz washed down from the Appalachians rather than crushed shell. Gulf State Park sits between the two towns with a lodge, a long fishing pier and a paved trail network, and Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge protects the quiet western end.

Public beaches open at all hours; lifeguards are seasonal and cover only the main public beaches. Gulf State Park charges a small day-use fee and keeps its own hours. The flag warning system is flown daily — double red means the water is closed.
