A mid-size ski area in Gilford, in the Belknap Range just south of Lake Winnipesaukee, owned by Belknap County and run by a county commission rather than a private company (confirm current arrangements). Its trails drop about 1,400 vertical feet (confirm) from a summit a little over 2,200 feet, and from the upper runs skiers look straight out over the lake, its islands and the White Mountains to the north, among the best lift-served lake views in New England. The area grew from a public recreation project of the 1930s and still sells itself on value, with day tickets usually below the big northern resorts, a beginner area, a terrain park and night skiing on some evenings (confirm). A cross-country and snowshoe centre has run on the lower mountain. In summer the mountain has operated an adventure park with zip lines, a mountain coaster, a treetop ropes course and scenic lift rides, beside a campground and trails up the Belknap summits. It is about two hours from Boston and a short drive from the lake beaches.
