Guthrie Theater

Theater · Minneapolis, Minnesota

A deep-blue slab of a building on the Mississippi riverfront, designed by Jean Nouvel and opened in 2006, housing the theatre Tyrone Guthrie founded in Minneapolis in 1963 as a deliberate alternative to Broadway — a resident company doing classical repertory a long way from New York. It has three stages, including a thrust stage descended from the one Guthrie built. The part most visitors come for costs nothing: the Endless Bridge, a lobby that juts 178 feet out over the river and is open to anyone, ticket or not.

818 South 2nd Street, Minneapolis, Minnesota, 55415, United States

The public lobbies, the Endless Bridge and the Amber Room are FREE and open through the day without a ticket, generally from late morning until after the evening performance. The performance season runs roughly September to June with summer programming across three stages, plus A Christmas Carol annually from November, which sells out. Backstage tours run on a limited booked schedule and are cancelled when the building is in production.
