Ha Ha Tonka State Park

Subnational Park · Camdenton, Missouri

Three and a half thousand acres on the Niangua arm of the Lake of the Ozarks, built around the burnt-out shell of a stone mansion that a Kansas City businessman began in 1905 in imitation of a sixteenth-century European castle. He died in a car accident before it was finished, it was completed as a hotel, and it burned in the 1940s - the walls and chimneys are what remain, standing on a bluff two hundred and fifty feet above the water. The rest of the park is one of the best karst landscapes in Missouri: a large spring, sinkholes, caves and a natural bridge.

1491 State Road D, Camdenton, Missouri, 65020, United States

FREE and open daily, generally dawn to dusk, year round. The visitor centre keeps shorter and seasonal hours. THERE IS NO CAMPING IN THIS PARK, which surprises people - the nearest is at Lake of the Ozarks State Park. The castle ruins are open at all times the park is. Trails to the spring and the natural bridge involve substantial stairs and are not lit.
