Haleakalā National Park

National Park · Makawao, Hawaii

A volcanic summit on Maui rising above ten thousand feet to a vast eroded basin that looks like nowhere else on earth, and - in a completely separate coastal district reached by the Hana Highway - the pools and rainforest of Kipahulu. Sunrise from the summit is the famous experience and requires a booking. It is an International Biosphere Reserve holding species found nowhere else, and the summit is a deeply sacred place in Hawaiian tradition.

PO Box 369, Makawao, Hawaii, 96768, United States

Open 24 hours a day, year-round, at both districts. An entrance fee applies per vehicle, valid three days, and covers both the summit and the Kipahulu coastal district. ⚠ SUNRISE AT THE SUMMIT BETWEEN 3AM AND 7AM REQUIRES A SEPARATE ADVANCE RESERVATION booked on recreation.gov - it is not the entrance fee, it is a small extra booking, and it releases sixty days ahead with a further batch two days before. Sunset needs no reservation. The two districts are NOT connected by a road inside the park.
