Hall Beach (Sanirajak)

An Inuit Hamlet On Foxe Basin, Built Around A Cold War Radar Station, With Walrus, Polar Bear And Bowhead Whale On The Surrounding Sea Ice And Tundra And A Tradition Of Hunting And Carving. A Remote Community Visited Through Local Guides, Reached Only By Air · Hall Beach, Nunavut

Hall Beach, Sanirajak in Inuktitut, is an Inuit hamlet of about 850 people on the Foxe Basin coast of the Melville Peninsula, in the central Arctic. The name means the place along the coast, and the community grew in the 1950s around a Cold War radar station of the Distant Early Warning line, which is why the airstrip is long and the hamlet sits on a flat, treeless shore. Foxe Basin is shallow, tidal and rich in life, and walrus, ringed seals, bowhead whales and polar bears use its ice and water. The hamlet is reached only by scheduled flight, normally from Iqaluit or via Igloolik, and it is not a sightseeing town. There is no tour desk and no fixed programme. Visitors arrange sea-ice and boat trips through local outfitters and the Hunters and Trappers Organization. Services are a co-op store, a small lodge and a few takeaway counters (confirm). Plan for wind, fog and plenty of spare days.

Hall Beach keeps no visiting hours because it is a living community. The co-op store, the lodge and any community hall keep their own hours, often a weekday pattern of roughly 9 to 5 with shorter days at weekends - confirm by phone. Floe-edge and snowmobile trips run roughly April to June while the sea ice holds, and boat trips for walrus and whales run roughly July to September in open water. Winter is dark, cold and quiet with few services for visitors. Walking the shore costs nothing at any hour. Sundays and public holidays are quiet, so buy food and fuel the day before.
