Hammocks Beach State Park

Island · Swansboro, North Carolina

An undeveloped barrier island of nearly four miles of Atlantic beach, reachable only by boat, with no road, no bridge and no buildings beyond a bathhouse. The park was given to the state in 1961 by the North Carolina Teachers Association - a Black teachers' organisation that had received the land as a gift and, in the segregation era, ran it as one of the very few beaches in the state where Black families could go. That history is the reason this park exists.
