Hammond Castle

National Register Of Historic Places · Gloucester, Massachusetts

A medieval-looking castle on a rock above the Atlantic at Gloucester, built between 1926 and 1929 by John Hays Hammond Jr., an inventor who held over four hundred patents and effectively invented radio remote control — at one point second only to Edison in American patents held. He built it to house his collection of Roman, medieval and Renaissance material and to hold an organ of more than eight thousand pipes, one of the largest ever installed in a private house.

80 Hesperus Avenue, Gloucester, Massachusetts, 01930, United States
