Hampton National Historic Site
National Historic Site · Towson, Maryland
A Georgian mansion outside Towson that was, when it was finished in 1790, the largest private house in the United States. The Ridgely family built it on a fortune made in iron — their furnaces cast cannon and shot for the Revolution — and held the estate for seven generations. The stone quarters where enslaved people lived still stand on the farm side of the road, and the National Park Service now tells the two halves as one story rather than as a house tour with a footnote.
535 Hampton Lane, Towson, Maryland, 21286, United States
FREE. The grounds, the gardens and the farm site are generally open daily in daylight. ⚠ THE MANSION AND THE HISTORIC BUILDINGS KEEP LIMITED AND VARIABLE HOURS and are shown on guided tours only, at set times, on a reduced number of days — the site has had extended closures for rehabilitation work in the past. VERIFY BEFORE TRAVELLING if going inside matters, because the grounds are open far more often than the buildings.
