Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve
Nature Preserve · Honolulu, Hawaii
A marine embayment formed inside a volcanic tuff ring on the south-east coast of Oahu, in the Hawaii Kai neighbourhood of East Honolulu, and the most famous snorkelling site in the state. The bay was loved almost to death by the millions who came to it, and it is now a managed nature preserve: numbers are capped, entry is reserved, the bay closes two days a week to let the reef recover, and everyone watches a conservation briefing before going in.
Kalanianaʻole Highway, Honolulu, Hawaii, 96825, United States
⚠ CLOSED TWO DAYS A WEEK - generally Mondays and Tuesdays - so the reef can rest, and this catches visitors constantly. Open the remaining days from early morning to mid-afternoon. ⚠ ENTRY REQUIRES AN ADVANCE ONLINE RESERVATION released a short window ahead, and slots go within minutes. There is a per-person entry fee for non-residents and a separate parking charge, and the car park fills early and closes when full. Every visitor must watch a short conservation video before going down to the beach.
