Hanford Reach National Monument
National Monument · Burbank, Washington
A 195,000-acre monument managed by the US Fish and Wildlife Service, wrapping around the historic Hanford Nuclear Site. Paradoxically, because the land was heavily guarded and off-limits to the public for decades to produce plutonium for the Manhattan Project, it created an accidental wilderness. It protects the last free-flowing, non-tidal stretch of the mighty Columbia River and pristine sagebrush steppe.
64 Maple Street, Burbank, Washington, 99323, United States
