The Hub Of Labrador, A Town On Lake Melville Built Around A Second World War Air Base, With A Regional Museum, Access To The Churchill River, The Mealy Mountains Region And The Trans Labrador Highway. A Major Service And Flight Centre For The Whole Region · Happy Valley-Goose Bay, Newfoundland and Labrador
Happy Valley-Goose Bay is the main town of central Labrador, home to roughly 8,000 people at the head of Lake Melville where the Churchill River reaches the sea (confirm figures). It began in 1941 as a Second World War air base on a sandy plateau chosen for flat ground and clear weather, and the base, now run by the Canadian military, still shapes the town. Innu, Inuit and settler families share the district, with the Innu community of Sheshatshiu nearby. This is a service town, not a sightseeing destination with a fixed programme, and its worth lies in what it connects. The airport, the ferry dock and the Trans-Labrador Highway start here, and a military museum, forest trails and the Mealy Mountains lie within reach. It has hotels, shops, a hospital, restaurants and car rental (confirm), making it the practical base for all of Labrador, with spare days advised for weather and for coastal flights.
