Harbin Ice and Snow World
Seasonal Ice Park Of The Harbin International Ice And Snow Festival · Harbin, Heilongjiang
The centrepiece of the Harbin International Ice and Snow Festival and the largest ice city built anywhere: each December a small city of palaces, towers, temples and giant slides rises on the north bank of the Songhua River from blocks of ice cut from the frozen river, lit from within after dark in shifting colour. Rebuilt from scratch every winter since 1999, it runs from roughly late December to late February in nights of -20 C and colder, and draws visitors from around the world. The lights switch on around 16:30, when a giant ice slide, a snowflake Ferris wheel and stage shows keep the site busy until late evening.
