Harmony Headlands State Park
State Park · Cayucos, California
Harmony Headlands State Park is a day-use park on the San Luis Obispo County coast, on Highway 1 near the tiny settlement of Harmony and a short drive north of Cambria. It is open grassland running down to coastal bluffs, land that was once dairy pasture, and it has no visitor centre, no camping and almost no services - confirm what is at the trailhead. A few miles of open trail lead from the highway toward the coast, with ocean views, spring wildflowers and, in winter and spring, gray whales passing offshore - confirm the trail layout and length before you set out. There is little shade, wind and fog are common, and the bluff edges are unstable. Cattle may graze on or near the land - confirm. Hearst Castle and Cambria are nearby, though the park itself is quiet and unhurried. It suits walkers who want quiet and a big sky, and it is a poor pick for swimming, beach play or anyone who needs toilets, water and a cafe close at hand.

California State Parks has generally run Harmony Headlands as a day-use park from early morning until sunset, with no staffed entrance - confirm the posted hours, whether a pay station collects a day-use fee and how many cars the small trailhead lot holds. Fog often covers the coast in the morning from late spring through summer and can linger all day, while winter storms can leave the dirt trails muddy or closed. There is no water and probably no shade, so plan the visit around the weather. Check the State Parks page and Highway 1 road alerts for closures on the day you go.
