Harold Washington Library Center

Modern Architecture · Chicago, Illinois

The central library of the Chicago Public Library, opened in 1991 and for years the largest public library building in the world by floor area. It is aggressively postmodern — a huge red granite and brick block quoting classical Chicago buildings, with enormous aluminium owls and acanthus leaves perched on the roofline that people either love or find ridiculous.

400 South State Street, Chicago, Illinois, 60605, United States

Free and open to anyone during library hours — generally daily with shorter Sunday hours. No card or ticket needed to enter.
