Harput Castle

A Ruined Fortress Above The Old Armenian, Kurdish And Turkish Town Of Harput, With The Ulu Mosque, A Byzantine Church, Ottoman Mansions And A View Over The Hazar Lake Plain. A Quiet Historic Town On A Hill, Visited With The Hazar Lake And Euphrates Dams · Harput, Elazig

Harput Castle stands on a rocky ridge about 5 km from the modern city of Elazig, in eastern Anatolia, above the ruins of the old town of Harput, which was an important regional centre for many centuries. The ridge was fortified in very early times, often traced to the Urartians (confirm), and later rulers, including Byzantines, Artuqids, Seljuks and Ottomans, held it in turn, so the surviving castle is a ruin of broken walls and towers rather than a complete fortress. Around it lie the Ulu Mosque with its leaning minaret, a ruined church, stone tombs and the remains of a mixed town whose Armenian, Turkish and Kurdish communities lived here until the early 20th century. The history of those years is remembered in different ways, and visitors will hear more than one account. The setting is quiet and open, with long views over the plain, Hazar Lake and the reservoirs of the upper Euphrates, and it suits a short, thoughtful stop of one to two hours.

The hilltop and its ruins are normally open all day with no gate, and the main monuments such as the Ulu Mosque are usually reachable from about 08:00 to dusk, with the mosque closed to visitors at prayer time (confirm). Any site museum or ticket booth keeps short hours, often 08:30 to 17:00, and may close on Monday (confirm). Cafes and tea gardens on the ridge are busiest at weekends and on summer evenings, and many close early or for the season from November to March. Snow, fog and strong wind can make the ridge road difficult in winter.
