Harran
Ancient Harran, Biblical Haran And Roman Carrhae, With Conical Mud Brick Beehive Houses, An 8th Century Mosque And Crusader Era Castle; On The UNESCO Tentative List · Harran, Sanliurfa
Harran sits on a flat plain forty-five kilometres south of Sanliurfa, close enough to the Syrian border to feel it, and it has been continuously named in written records for roughly four thousand years. Abraham is said in Genesis to have stopped here on the way to Canaan. It was the last stronghold of a moon-god cult that outlasted Christianity in the region by centuries, and the Parthians annihilated Crassus and seven Roman legions on the plain outside in 53 BC, which is one of the worst defeats Rome ever took. What stands now is a low mound of ruins, the walls of a castle, and the Great Mosque with a square minaret - eighth century, and one of the oldest mosques in Anatolia. The conical mud-brick beehive houses that everyone photographs are a real local building type, but most of the surviving ones are kept as show houses and tea rooms rather than lived in, and it is better to know that in advance.
