Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad National Historical Park
National Historical Park · Church Creek, Maryland
The landscape Harriet Tubman was born into, escaped from, and came back to about thirteen times to lead roughly seventy other people out. She was born Araminta Ross in Dorchester County around 1822 and worked these marshes, timber stands and waterways as a child and a young woman. The park's visitor centre opened in 2017 and is genuinely excellent, but the exhibit that matters is out of the window: the marsh, the loblolly and the water are close to what she moved through, because almost nobody has built on any of it since.
4068 Golden Hill Road, Church Creek, Maryland, 21622, United States
FREE. The visitor centre is generally open Tuesday to Sunday, roughly 9 AM to 4 or 5 PM, and CLOSED MONDAYS and on some federal holidays — verify before travelling, because this is a long way down the Eastern Shore. The legacy garden and grounds are open when the centre is. THE HARRIET TUBMAN UNDERGROUND RAILROAD BYWAY is a self-guided driving route open at all times; most of its sites are roadside markers and landscape rather than staffed buildings, and several are on private land to be viewed only from the road.
