Harvard University

National Historic Landmark · Cambridge, Massachusetts

The oldest university in the United States, founded in 1636, and probably the most recognised university name anywhere on earth. The part visitors come for is Harvard Yard — a walled quadrangle of red brick and old trees in the middle of Cambridge, open to walk into for free, holding the freshman dormitories, Memorial Church, the vast Widener Library and the John Harvard statue that everybody photographs and that is wrong in three separate ways. Two of the university's museums are among the best of their kind in America.

Massachusetts Avenue, Harvard Yard, Cambridge, Massachusetts, 02138, United States

Harvard Yard is FREE and open to walk through; it closes to visitors around Commencement in late May. The Harvard Art Museums and the Museum of Natural History keep their own daytime hours and charge modest admission, with free or reduced entry for Massachusetts residents. Free student-led tours leave from the Smith Campus Center and must be booked ahead online.
