Hastings and Havelock North

Napier'S Inland Twin City On The Fertile Heretaunga Plains, Anchoring The Tukituki Valley'S Cellar Doors And Orchards, With The Te Mata Peak Lookout Above The Tidy Village Of Havelock North Giving The Region'S Widest View Back Over Hawke'S Bay · Hastings, Hawke's Bay

Hastings sits inland from Napier on the flat, fertile Heretaunga Plains, Hawke's Bay's larger twin city and the working anchor of a wine and orchard region built around the Tukituki Valley. Vineyards and cellar doors spread across the plains and the valley's gravel terraces, a landscape better suited to Bordeaux-style reds and Chardonnay than the cooler Pinot Noir country further south, with a growing season long and warm enough to ripen fruit reliably most years. A short drive from central Hastings, the village of Havelock North keeps a tidy, boutique character around its own small square, with cafes, a produce market and a cluster of wine-focused shops. Immediately above the village, Te Mata Peak rises as a limestone ridge, reached by a sealed summit road, giving the region's widest lookout back across the plains, the vines and orchards, and the coast beyond. Paragliders launch from the peak on suitable days, and walking tracks cross its lower slopes. The valley stays genuinely rural beyond the cellar doors, with orchards of apples, pears and stone fruit worked alongside the vines.

Te Mata Peak's summit road and walking tracks are open at all hours with free access, though the exposed summit can close briefly to vehicles in high wind - confirm current conditions before driving up. Tukituki Valley cellar doors vary by producer, with most larger wineries open daily through the warmer months, roughly late morning to mid afternoon, while several smaller operations pour by appointment only, especially outside summer. Havelock North's village shops and cafes keep fairly standard daytime hours with some reducing on quiet winter weekdays.
