Havre de Grace

Heritage District · Havre de Grace, Maryland

A small town at the head of the Chesapeake where the Susquehanna comes in, with a lighthouse of 1827 at the point and a boardwalk running along the water. The British burned it in May 1813 and one man, John O'Neill, stayed at the battery and fought the landing party alone until he was captured; he was later given the lighthouse keeper's job and his family held it for a century. In 1789 Congress voted on where to put the national capital and this town is said to have lost by a single vote.
